MARIPOSAS

These Mariposas have been created through a digital collage process where the artist selected and merged photographs and scans of her two daughters’ and her hair. The series draws from Victorian hair art, Mexican folk art and the artist’s maternal instinct for preserving things left behind. Additionally, it symbolizes the confluence of cultures in which the artist raised her daughters, as realized by the migratory route of the monarch butterfly. The artist was formerly based in Boston and New York, and moved to Mexico where her second daughter was born and where she raised both children. The unique artistic process has been termed “digital embroidery” and the prints have been made with archival inks and Hahnemühle cotton rag paper.

 

Estas Mariposas han sido creadas mediante un proceso de collage digital en el que la artista seleccionó y fusionó fotografías y escaneos del cabello de sus dos hijas y el suyo propio. La serie se inspira en el arte capilar victoriano, el arte popular mexicano y el instinto maternal de la artista por conservar las cosas que quedan atrás. Además, simboliza la confluencia de culturas en la que la artista crió a sus hijas, tal y como se refleja en la ruta migratoria de la mariposa monarca. La artista, que anteriormente residía en Boston y Nueva York, se mudó a México, donde nació su segunda hija y donde crió a sus dos hijas. Este proceso artístico único se ha denominado «bordado digital» y las impresiones se han realizado con tintas de archivo y papel de algodón Hahnemühle.
